WHY ARE LICHENS SO SPECIAL??
Lichens are not plants!! They are a fungus and algae living intimately together as one organism. In this mutually beneficial relationship, the fungus collects water and protects the algae from excess light and water loss. The algae performs photosynthesis to provide carbohydrates for the both of them. When moisture is available, new food and tissue is made. When dry the lichens go dormant but is still living. By bonding together, they are hardy and long lived, able to withstand extreme conditions. Lichens are slow growing and one of the oldest living things on earth with more than 18,000 species!
